The Effectiveness of a Health Coaching Educational Intervention in Reducing the Symptoms of Chronic Type 2 Diabetes Among Black Residents of the United Kingdom
Black African and Caribbean populations in the United Kingdom (UK) experience a disproportionate burden of type 2 diabetes (T2D), characterized by higher prevalence rates, earlier onset, and an increased risk of severe complications compared with White populations. Despite this elevated risk, there remains limited availability of culturally tailored, evidence-based interventions designed specifically for these communities. This dissertation argues that culturally
sensitive lifestyle interventions, adapted to the social and cultural realities of Black African and Caribbean populations in the UK, are critical for improving diabetes outcomes. The study evaluates the impact of a 12-week, one-to-one health coaching intervention developed specifically for adult individuals from Black African and Caribbean populations in the UK living with T2D. The intervention employed motivational interviewing techniques and culturally appropriate lifestyle recommendations to address structural and sociocultural barriers to self- management, with the aim of improving metabolic health outcomes. Key outcomes assessed included body weight, blood pressure, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), sleep quality, and overall well-being.
