The Impact of Government Agricultural Expenditure on Agricultural Productivity in Nigeria

Public expenditure can be described as any amount of money spent by the government, and when such amount spent is traceable to promotion of agricultural-related matters, it can be referred to as agricultural expenditure. Nigeria’s public agricultural expenditure increased from 1.9 million in 1971 to 10.7 million in 1973 and 22.4 million in 1975, just as agricultural spending surged quickly in the 1990s, reaching N593.16 billion in 1999, N701 billion in 2020, and around N1.1tn, 1.5tn and N2tn in 2021, 2022 and 2023 respectively (Central Bank of Nigeria, 2024). In spite of the foregoing, agricultural output has been on the downward trends for decades while food import bills have assumed worrisome rise according to Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (2023). This then calls into question, the essence of yearly rising agricultural expenditure on agricultural productivity, and underscores the need to address the ignoble paradox of increasing agricultural expenditure versus decreasing agricultural productivity in Nigeria.
