Academic Backwardness
Academic backwardness is a bigger problem than society understands and too big for scholars and policy-makers not to notice. The primary objective of this research is to demonstrate that there are viable solutions to academic backwardness. As such, the research has focused on four smaller objectives that seek to offer an understanding of academic backwardness, assess the root causes of the problem, explore positive reinforcement as a feasible intervention, and outline what can be done to help learners without labeling them as special. These objectives help develop recommendations for future research and practice on how to improve the academic performance of academically backward students.
The research adopts a qualitative approach designed to help offer a detailed assessment of the problem. The design selected is a case study, which also allows in-depth analysis of a problem. The data is collected from Four case studies of academically backward students facing different challenges. A qualitative content analysis is used to analyze the information collected from the Four case studies. Themes are developed using the research objectives. The results from the case study help offer a comprehensive overview of academic
backwardness. The results varied across the Four case studies since each case was unique. However, the main finding is that in all the cases student’s situation were turned around and the students started performing better. This observation only justifies the argument that positive reinforcement effectively resolved the academic backwardness problem. The root causes of academic backwardness are diverse, and each should warrant an individualized approach. However, any standard intervention framework could involve identifying the problem, examining its root causes, assessing alternative interventions, and selecting one that works best for the specific case.
Day-to-day positive reinforcement power of ‘Word’ medicine, part of Energy Medicine an Alternative Medicine, works effectively in resolving academic backwardness. However, it worked most effectively when the root causes of academic backwardness were addressed. Regardless, results indicated a remarkable change in performance levels, which justifies the conclusion that day-to-day positive reinforcement should be considered an effective intervention for academic backwardness.
