AN ANALYSIS OF TRAINING NEEDS FOR ENHANCING EMPLOYEE CAREER DEVELOPMENT WITHIN AN ORGANISATION: AN ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT PERSPECTIVE

This research aims to establish the factors that determine the career mobility of engineering management employees in Malaysia, particularly Training and Development Programs, Competency-Based Performance Management, Career Development Opportunities, Employee Engagement and Motivation, and Talent Management Practices. Based on a descriptive research approach, questionnaires were administered to 195 respondents and Data collected were analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). The results clearly show that Talent Management Practices and Career Development Opportunities are the two most crucial factors to consider regarding Career Mobility: Impacts of Structured Mentorship, Leadership Development, and Cross-Project Assignments.
Though the Training and Development Programs and Competency-Based Performance Management function demonstrated the effect with lesser emphasis, the role of these activities should be well correlated with proper career progress. Regarding the aspects of employee engagement and motivation, there was a poor impact suggested, which could be attributed to autocratic organizational structures that constrained employees’ input.
The paper theoretically and empirically extends the existing literature by confirming the transferability of organizational practices in the context of career advancement in the engineering profession and establishing how the proposed variables could be systematically combined within a consolidated framework. Implications for theory include the support for the Human Capital Theory. Practical implications include a call to engineering firms to focus on talent management and to design and implement bespoke development programs to improve employee turnover and productivity.
