Comparing the Impact of Using Additional Visual Aids on Vocabulary Acquisition for First Grade ESL Learners in Vietnam

This action research study was conducted in a bilingual school in Vietnam with first grade students. Its main goal was to evaluate the impact of different types of visual aids on vocabulary acquisition. Specifically, the study compared the effectiveness of the original images from the ESL textbook, simple icon-style clipart, and more realistic photos. The study was conducted over three sessions taking place during three consecutive weeks. The study involved between 57 to 60 first-grade students with different English proficiency levels, and each group was given the exact same vocabulary lesson, with the only difference being the type of visual aid used with the vocabulary.
