Effectiveness of Occupational Therapy in Post-Surgical Rehabilitation for Orthopedic Patients

Occupation Therapy (OT) is an effective rehabilitation method post-surgery as and when indicated, especially in the case of orthopaedic patients; as it facilitates functional independence and enhanced quality of life following the surgical procedure, be it arthroplasty, or auto-Orto graft or repair of the fracture. A holistic approach is used for occupational therapy focusing on both physical and psychosocial needs of patients directly impacting the rehabilitation process.
Given its potential to improve recovery outcomes and patient satisfaction, this multidimensional care strategy has drawn interest and made OT a cornerstone of orthopaedic rehabilitation programmes. Overall studies on orthopaedic patient participants reveal improvements at least twofold in functional status and recoverability.
Functional outcomes measures and the Goal Attainment Scale (GAS) are commonly used methodologies to assess the effectiveness of OT in terms of the ability to perform and the accomplishment of rehabilitation goals over time.
Additionally, OTs focus on the individual, adjusting treatment based on specific client needs and goals, allowing for more participation and empowerment in the recovery process.
Although occupational therapy is efficacious and beneficial, it is controversial for multiple reasons, including time constraints, the burden of documentation, and choice of outcome measures that represent heterogeneous patient populations.
