Factors Influencing Student Motivation in Large Primary School Classrooms in Vietnam: Challenges and Interventions

This study examines the critical issue of student motivation in large Vietnamese primary school classrooms, where class sizes often exceed 45 students, creating significant psychological and pedagogical challenges. In subjects like English, which many students perceive as irrelevant to their daily lives and future careers, maintaining engagement becomes increasingly difficult. This research investigates how classroom size, discipline issues, curriculum rigidity, and teaching strategies collectively impact student motivation and learning outcomes.
Using a mixed-methods approach—including surveys, classroom observations, and teacher interviews—this study identifies key barriers to engagement. High noise levels, limited individualized attention, and a lack of effective classroom management strategies hinder students' ability to remain focused. Many students from low-income backgrounds exhibit low intrinsic motivation, exacerbated by minimal parental involvement in their education. While engagement tools such as interactive smartboards and gamified activities initially capture interest, their long-term effectiveness declines due to overuse and lack of instructional variety. Additionally, discipline strategies, ranging from vocal control to direct interventions, prove difficult to sustain in overcrowded environments where students receive minimal personal accountability.
